When:     Saturday June 5, Sunday June 6 2010

Where:    First Unitarian Society of Denver, 1400 Lafayette St., Denver, CO

Cost:       Free

The ninth annual LifeRing Congress and Expo will take place on the first weekend in June 2010 in Denver, hosted by the Denver area LifeRing groups.  As in past events, this will be a combination of socializing, education, and democratic decision-making. Two main speakers are announced, see below.  There will be additional workshops.  The Delegates’ Assembly (business meeting) will take up the important proposals of the LifeRing Expansion Committee (click for details).

Main speakers:

Bill Staudenmaier

Dr. Staudenmaier is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Denver, CO, and an adjunct faculty member with the M.A. Contemplative Program at Naropa University in Boulder. He is engaged in clinical practice, supervision, consultation, and training. He integrates Existential and Contemplative principles in his work and focuses on the development of skillful awareness, personal responsibility and compassion. He works with individuals, couples and groups. In his work he emphasizes the development of mindfulness as a means to learning how to better understand and respond to the difficulties that we experience in our personal challenges and in our relationships. In the work with clients he trusts that the client has the capability to live life in a confident and clear manner. The challenge for each person is to discover what is personally true and good in his or her life. This process of discovery is unique, often obscure, but ultimately available when the person grants the permission to trust in his or her natural goodness and brilliant sanity.

Candice Shelby

Candice Shelby is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado at Denver.  She received her B.A. from the University of Houston in 1984, and her Master’s degree and Ph.D. from Rice University, in 1988 and 1991, respectively. She began her career publishing scholarly papers on issues in 17th century metaphysics. That came to a screaming halt when the profundity of its uselessness finally dawned on her. After an epiphany regarding the importance of relevance in philosophy, she now writes on analytic philosophy of mind, particularly on issues that relate to her larger project, of finding a new and complete analysis of addiction. She has published some articles in this area, but has given many more personal presentations. Her special authority in this field derives from her coming from a long line of alcoholics and addicts.
